After recently purchasing their new home in Motherwell, Liz and Evelyn’s immediate priority was restoring the property’s exterior to match its fresh interior. Years of exposure to heavy Scottish rainfall and cold temperatures had allowed thick moss, lichens, and atmospheric dirt to take root across the roof tiles. The accumulation was so severe that the original color and texture of the roof were entirely obscured, casting a tired, aged shadow over an otherwise vibrant new home.
Recognizing that a simple surface rinse would not deliver lasting protection, Liz and Evelyn turned to The Outside Clean. They requested a comprehensive solution that would safely lift years of heavy organic buildup, protect the underlying structural integrity of the roof, and prevent rapid moss return. Our team executed a full steam cleaning service followed by an HSE-approved biocide treatment, transforming the roofline and completely elevating the home’s overall curb appeal.
Working on this Motherwell property presented several distinct challenges common to established Scottish residential areas. The primary issue was the density of the moss cushions, which held rainwater against the tiles like a heavy sponge. This constant moisture load not only threatened tile integrity during winter freeze-thaw cycles but also caused heavy debris to break off and spill into surrounding gutter channels and downpipes.
Additionally, because Liz and Evelyn had just taken ownership of the property, preserving their new investment without causing accidental damage was paramount. Using aggressive, high-pressure jet washing on aged concrete tiles carries severe risks—including stripped factory coatings, chipped tile edges, and internal water ingress through the roofline. Our process needed to achieve maximum deep cleaning power while remaining entirely non-destructive to the home. For roof cleaning in Glasgow, choose Outside Clean.

To resolve these challenges without compromising tile safety, The Outside Clean deployed a tailored, two-stage roof restoration process. First, our technicians manually scraped down the heavy moss cushions using custom-profile scrapers designed to match the precise contours of the tiles. We then utilized specialized steam cleaning equipment—operating at low pressure but high temperature—to melt away ground-in atmospheric dirt, lichen spots, and traffic grime gently.
The transformation achieved on Liz and Evelyn’s Motherwell home was immediate and dramatic. Stripping away years of dark organic growth revealed the bright, natural color of the roof tiles beneath, giving the entire property a fresh, pristine appearance. What previously looked like a worn, aged roof now carries the clean aesthetic of a newly installed roofline.
